Cover of Sentries along the Shore

Not available in stores, this book went out of print in 2004, but there's good news!

Elinor DeWire has copies for sale from her personal collection.

Sentries along the Shore is a collection of installments from Elinor DeWire's longtime column for the National Weather Service called "Whale Oil & Wicks," which profiled historic lighthouses. Also included are selected lighthouse-related articles by DeWire printed in mass market magazines from the 1980s and 1990s. The cover features an Iris print watercolor of Nauset Beach Light by Kentucky artist Jim Mahanes. Black & white illustrations and photos enhance the text. This book was called "The best lighthouse book in print" by a reviewer for the National Power Squadron newletter in 1998.

Softcover, 172 pages, illustrated, indexed, autographed.
